Assignment 7- Caroline Couch

The day I chose was October 10th, which was Columbus Day. I have a hard time celebrating this holiday because learning about Colobus and his treatment of the Natives when he "discovered" America was brutal and quite frankly I found it repulsive. He claimed he found the Americas when in fact the Vikings had been there centuries before many times, he also thought that he had found another route to the East Indies but in fact he hit another continent on his way. He treated the Native Americans brutally by enslaving them and cutting off their limbs for not being able to find him enough gold for the day. I have trouble celebrating a holiday for a brutal selfish man. But you can argue that without him the Old World wouldn't have settled or even found our continent for many years, you can say that without him we would not be where we are today, without him history would have changed drastically.
