Assignment 17: Naylan James

My review of Split
Going in to the movie, the last time I had seen James McAvoy act was in Wanted with Angelina Jolie, so I didn't have high hopes for him. In Split he basically played 24 different people and exceeded expectations by more than I had imagined. The movie itself seemed to be a strange horror-thriller, but by the end I wouldn't put it in the horror category at all, as it seemed to be more of a psychological thriller. I compared the trailer to a mix of "Don't Breathe" and "Silence of the Lambs", as it had the trapped horror feeling but also the psychological torment that the characters would deal with. I would put this movie well over "Don't Breathe" as it wasn't solely trying to jump scare you every chance it got, but it didn't accomplish the sort of mind-game effect that Silence of the Lambs was able to achieve. The movie also had a strong underlying message that was refreshing and wasn't blatantly yelled out towards the end, it was one that you wouldn't necessarily notice unless you wanted to. 7/10
